How about this, Lee? You take your child to the Y for swim lessons, sit at the side of the pool or in the observation area while a trained individual teaches your child to swim. You cheer them on, and give them a big hug at the end no matter how well or poorly they did.
I distinctly remember my father running down the street, holding the back of the seat of my red 24" Schwinn. It took me a while to get the hang of it, and probably wore him out, but he was happy to do it and I learned how to ride. Fast forward many years, and I taught my kids the same way.
